New York, NY — July 23, 2026 — Artist Maria F. Izaguirre has been named a 2026 NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellow in Digital/Electronic Arts, one of New York State’s most respected honors for practicing artists. Administered by the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) in partnership with the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), the fellowship recognizes artists whose work demonstrates exceptional artistic vision and achievement through a highly competitive peer-review process.
The 2026 NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship Program recognized 132 artists and artist collaborations across New York State working in Craft/Sculpture, Digital/Electronic Arts, Nonfiction Literature, Poetry, and Printmaking/Drawing/Book Arts. This year’s Fellows and Finalists were selected from 3,985 applications by panels of artists and arts professionals. Since its launch in 1985, the program has recognized more than 5,700 artists throughout New York State.
Izaguirre was recognized in the Digital/Electronic Arts category, which honors artists working with emerging technologies, interactive systems, immersive environments, and hybrid analog-digital practices. According to NYFA, the strongest applications in this discipline demonstrated that technology was not merely a tool or aesthetic choice, but an essential component of the conceptual and structural meaning of the work.
Working at the intersection of art, technology, and cybernetics, Maria F. Izaguirre develops interdisciplinary installations, software-based artworks, performative systems, and hybrid media that investigate communication, perception, and the evolving relationships between humans, machines, and non-human forms of intelligence. Her practice combines artistic research with custom technological development, inviting audiences to engage with complex systems through direct experience.

The fellowship marks a significant milestone in Izaguirre’s ongoing artistic trajectory. Recent projects include The Postpoetic Machine™, an evolving body of work exploring cybernetic communication between humans and non-human agents through language, sound, robotics, and participatory performance. Her practice has previously been supported by the New York State Council on the Arts, the Queens Council on the Arts, More Art, the Jerome Foundation, and other organizations dedicated to advancing contemporary art and interdisciplinary research.

Maria Fernanda (Mafe) Izaguirre (Caracas, 1978) is a New York-based interdisciplinary artist whose work explores cybernetics, artificial intelligence, communication, and hybrid ecologies through installation, software, robotics, performance, and emerging technologies. Her projects investigate how technological systems reshape perception, agency, and relationships between human and non-human forms of intelligence. Her work has been exhibited internationally and supported by organizations including the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA), More Art, the Queens Council on the Arts, and the Jerome Foundation, among others.

Administrado por la New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) en colaboración con el New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), este programa distingue a artistas cuyo trabajo demuestra una visión artística excepcional y una trayectoria sobresaliente, mediante un riguroso proceso de evaluación por pares.

Izaguirre fue reconocida en la categoría de Artes Digitales y Electrónicas, que distingue a artistas que trabajan con tecnologías emergentes, sistemas interactivos, entornos inmersivos y prácticas híbridas que integran procesos analógicos y digitales. Desde la intersección entre el arte, la tecnología y la cibernética, Maria F. Izaguirre desarrolla instalaciones interdisciplinarias, obras basadas en software, sistemas performativos y medios híbridos que investigan la comunicación, la percepción y la evolución de las relaciones simbióticas entre seres humanos, máquinas y formas no-humanas de inteligencia. Su práctica combina investigación artística con el desarrollo de tecnologías propias, invitando al público a experimentar directamente sistemas complejos.

Este reconocimiento representa un hito significativo dentro de la trayectoria artística de Izaguirre. Entre sus proyectos recientes se encuentra The Postpoetic Machine™, un cuerpo de trabajo en constante evolución que explora la comunicación cibernética entre seres humanos y agentes no humanos mediante el lenguaje, el sonido, la robótica y la performance participativa.
