Long Island City, New York — Artist Maria F. Izaguirre has been selected as the recipient of the FST StudioProjects Fund 2023 award, a distinguished accolade established by Frederieke Sanders Taylor in 2017 to champion studio practice and support emerging artists in New York City.

Frederieke Sanders Taylor, a visionary gallerist, lifelong art collector, and esteemed advisor to various arts organizations in New York, created the FST StudioProjects Fund with a steadfast commitment to nurturing new and emerging talents in the arts. Born in Schiedam, the Netherlands, Taylor earned her BA from Leiden University and an MA from Yale University, specializing in Chinese literature and language.
Throughout her distinguished career, Taylor left an indelible mark on the New York City arts scene, serving in pivotal roles such as the first Administrative and Development Director for the Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies, Executive Director of the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Director of the MacDowell Colony, and Director of the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture.
Taylor’s visionary leadership extended to board memberships in various organizations dedicated to expanding public access to the arts. She played a vital role in the development and outreach efforts of organizations such as Meredith Monk’s House Foundation, Art Table, the Museum of Modern Art’s Architecture and Design Committee, Art in General, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, and the Advisory Committee of the Storefront for Art and Architecture and Franklin Furnace Archives.
An avid art collector, Taylor curated a collection characterized by conceptual, international, and often deeply-ironic works, reflecting her broad appreciation for diverse artistic expressions. In the 1990s, she transitioned to professional curatorial work, organizing exhibitions for institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Sculpture Center, and private galleries, including the renowned 55 Ferris Street exhibitions in Brooklyn.
In 1993, Taylor opened her gallery, initially named TZ’ART Gallery, in Soho, which later became the Frederieke Taylor Gallery when she relocated it to Chelsea in 2000. The gallery showcased a diverse array of exhibits covering contemporary conceptual painting and photography, design, architecture, and installation art, featuring artists like Meredith Monk, Breaded Escalope, Long-Bin Chen, Mel Chin, Antenna Design, Jackie Ferrara, and Marcel Wanders. The gallery continued to be a hub for artistic exploration until Taylor’s passing in 2018.
