Mafe Izaguirre will present her first solo show in New York this coming winter 2020, as a Queens Arts Council Grant Awardee.
NEW YORK CITY, NY – March 2020, / – Artist Mafe Izaguirre announced today that she was chosen as one of the 2020 Queens Fund Awardee, an art access Grant funded by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, Greater New York Arts Development Fund. Mafe Izaguirre is a Venezuelan artist based in Queens, known for her cybernetic installations dedicated to exploring hybrid spiritual systems. The Queens Arts Council has selected Izaguirre as one of the artists who will receive support this year for the production of new work. The new sensitive machines™ edition will be shared with the community in Izaguirre’s first solo exhibition, taking place at the Plaxall Gallery, during the winter of 2020.
Mafe Izaguirre’s work exploring the artificial emotional intelligence framed as “The Mind Project” was chosen through a public art competition conducted the last year 2019 by The Queens Council for the Arts (QCA), a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded in 1966, as part of the Kaufman Arts District. QCA’s mission is to encourage and develop the arts in Queens County and support individual artists and artistic organizations to present their cultural diversity for the benefit of the community. This space promotes an exciting intersection of arts, commerce, media, promotion and the creation of strategic networks for the artistic and cultural institutions of Queens. The grant is open every year to individual artists of all artistic disciplines who live or have a studio in Queens for the creation of new work. The Queens Arts Fund is committed to supporting emerging artists from diverse cultural backgrounds, working within all disciplines to create work that provides open and equal access for audiences in all communities of Queens, to further racial and cultural equity.
Mafe Izaguirre lives and creates her art in New York City and has been an artist, graphic designer and educator there and abroad for more than 20 years. Regarding this grant, Izaguirre stated “I am very pleased and gratified to be supported by QCA in the creation of new work and what it will be my first solo show in the United States. Counting with the support of the QCA and the Queens community gives a great platform for an immigrant artist like me, who are pursuing to develop a professional career in the international art field. The Queen’s community, through the Long Island City Artists Association as well as Plaxall Gallery, have been a critical support for my development and growth as an artist.”
Izaguirre will present her first solo exhibition in New York City during the winter of 2020, at the Plaxall Gallery. The exhibition will show for the first time a compilation of four years of work and a decade dedicated to research on the artificial mind and the emotional intelligence. This event is made possible in part by the Queens Council on the Arts with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council; as well as with the support of the More Art Foundation.

Mafe Izaguirre (Venezuela, 1978) is a New York-based artist, graphic designer, and educator. Izaguirre graduated from PROdiseño School of Visual Communication, specializing in Digital Media (2002). In 2016, she moved from Caracas to New York to extend her technical skills in digital fabrication. Among them, Cooper Union stand out. Her work explores the artificial mind framed by the ideas of the philosophical post-humanism: a movement that poses the human as a plural, fluid and decentered being living in multiple spaces of interaction with machines, software, other species, and spiritual hybrid systems. Framed as The Mind Project, fragments of her cybernetic installations have been exhibited in Queens, Manhattan, and Brooklyn. Izaguirre is an artist member of the Long Island City Artist Association. She works as a tech mentor at Mouse Inc (Manhattan), DreamYard Project (Bronx), and as co-founder and Creative Director of ROOM: A Sketchbook for Analytic Action, an online psychoanalytic magazine created by IPTAR members. Mafe Izaguirre presentará a su primera individual en Nueva York el próximo invierno de 2020, como ganadora del fondo del Consejo de las Artes de Queens.
CIUDAD DE NUEVA YORK, NY – Marzo de 2020, / – La artista Mafe Izaguirre anunció hoy que fue elegida como una de las ganadoras del Fondo de Queens 2020, una subvención de acceso al arte financiada por el Departamento de Asuntos Culturales de la Ciudad de Nueva York, Fondo de Desarrollo de las Artes de Nueva York. Mafe Izaguirre es una artista venezolana con sede en Queens, conocida por sus instalaciones cibernéticas dedicadas a explorar sistemas espirituales híbridos. El Consejo de las Artes de Queens ha seleccionado a Izaguirre como una de las artistas que recibirán apoyo este año para la producción de su primera exposición individual. El espectáculo se llevará a cabo en la Galería Plaxall, durante el invierno de 2020.
El trabajo de Mafe Izaguirre explorando la inteligencia emocional artificial enmarcada como “El Proyecto Mente” fue elegido a través de un concurso de arte público realizado el año pasado 2019 por El Consejo de las Artes de Queens (The Queens Council for the Arts (QCA)), una organización sin fines de lucro fundada en 1966, como parte del distrito de artes de Kaufman. La misión de QCA es fomentar y desarrollar las artes en el condado de Queens y apoyar a artistas y organizaciones artísticas individuales para que presenten su diversidad cultural en beneficio de la comunidad. Este espacio promueve una emocionante intersección de las artes, el comercio, los medios, la promoción y la creación de redes estratégicas para las instituciones artísticas y culturales de Queens. Izaguirre presentará su primera exposición individual en la ciudad de Nueva York en el invierno de 2020, en la Galería Plaxall, en la cual mostrará por primera vez una recopilación de cuatro años de trabajo y una década dedicada a la investigación sobre la mente artificial y la inteligencia emocional. Este espectáculo es posible en parte por el Consejo de las Artes de Queens con fondos públicos del Departamento de Asuntos Culturales de la Ciudad de Nueva York en colaboración con el Consejo de la Ciudad, así como con el apoyo de la Fundación More Art.

Mafe Izaguirre (Venezuela, 1978) es una artista venezolana radicada en Nueva York. Su obra, denominada El Proyecto Mente propone un sistema fragmentario de cuerpos cibernéticos y memoria extendida que constituyen su ser espiritual híbrido. Estas instalaciones cibernéticas han sido exhibidas y presentadas en galerías y seminarios en Nueva York así como en el seminario Humano: Demasiado Posthumano, organizado por la UCAB y Fundación Telefónica, en Venezuela (2019). Egresada de PROdiseño, Izaguirre se ha desarrollado profesionalmente también en el campo del diseño gráfico aplicado a medios digitales y como educadora. En 2016, se muda a Nueva York para estudiar técnicas de fabricación en Cooper Union, entre otras capacitaciones técnicas necesarias para construir, lo que Izaguirre denomina, “máquinas sensibles”. Su trabajo explora la mente artificial desde las ideas propuestas por el posthumanismo filosófico: un movimiento que sitúa al humano como un ser plural, fluido y descentralizado que cohabita en múltiples espacios de interacción con máquinas, software, otras especies y sistemas híbridos espirituales.
Izaguirre colabora como mentora orientando a niños y jóvenes en cuanto al uso de la tecnología con fines sociales en la organización sin fines de lucro Mouse Inc., y como artista residente en el Centro de Arte DreamYard Project ubicado en el Bronx. Izaguirre pertenece a la Asociación de Artistas de Long Island City; es fundadora y Directora Creativa de la revista psicoanalítica ROOM: Skeckbook for Analytic Action, una publicación independiente que intersecta análisis, política, arte, cultura y activismo.
