NEW YORK CITY, NY – February 2020, / – Artist Mafe Izaguirre announced today that she was chosen as one of the eight artists participating in the More Art’s Engaging Artists 2020 Fellowship, a program offered by More Art nonprofit organization that supports collaborations between professional artists and communities to create public art and educational programs that inspire social justice in New York City, NY.

Mafe Izaguirre is a Venezuelan New York-based artist, known for her cybernetic installations and sensitive machines™. If you are not familiar with the program, Emerging Artist Fellowship is More Art’s 2-tiered, Fellowship and Residency program for artists seeking to both develop and sustain their public art and socially-engaged practices. The program curriculum encompasses a professional development series, public art commission opportunities, mentorship, and peer networking. Izaguirre has been selected as part of the cohort that will begin this week, with the development of one of the projects listed as critical for public space that will be completed in early 2021.

Mafe Izaguirre’s work exploring the artificial emotional intelligence framed as “The Mind Project” was chosen through a public art competition conducted the last year 2019 by the More Art committee. More Art focuses on building collaborations between the neighbors by creating opportunities for creative community education and public art projects. The twelve-month fellowship provides both infrastructure and laboratory for NYC-based emerging and underrepresented artists to gain a deeper understanding of the history of the field of public art, incubate and develop their early-stage research and project, collaborate with communities in shaping society, and build sustainable careers.

Mafe Izaguirre lives and creates her art in New York City and has been an artist, graphic designer and educator there and abroad for more than 20 years. Regarding this fellowship, Izaguirre stated “I am very pleased and gratified to be chosen by More Art for this incredible and complete Fellowship. It is nice to be recognized locally in the art capital of the world (NYC) and also be able to give back to the community and other fellow artists through this meaningful and collaborative program.”

More Art has recently celebrated its fourteen-year anniversary, producing until date more than 40 public art projects and creating on average six education projects every year. Mafe Izaguirre (Venezuela, 1978) is a New York-based artist, graphic designer, and educator. Izaguirre graduated from PROdiseño School of Visual Communication, specializing in Digital Media (2002). In 2016, she moved from Caracas to New York to extend her technical skills in digital fabrication. Among them, Cooper Union stand out. Her work explores the artificial mind framed by the ideas of the philosophical post-humanism: a movement that poses the human as a plural, fluid and decentered being living in multiple spaces of interaction with machines, software, other species, and spiritual hybrid systems. Framed as The Mind Project, fragments of her cybernetic installations have been exhibited in Queens, Manhattan, and Brooklyn. Izaguirre is an artist member of the Long Island City Artist Association. She works as a tech mentor at Mouse Inc (Manhattan), DreamYard Project (Bronx), and as co-founder and Creative Director of ROOM: A Sketchbook for Analytic Action, an online psychoanalytic magazine created by IPTAR members. CIUDAD DE NUEVA YORK, NY – Febrero de 2020, / – La artista Mafe Izaguirre anunció hoy que fue elegida como una de las ocho artistas que participan en la beca More Art’s Engaging Artists 2020, un programa ofrecido por la organización sin fines de lucro More Art que apoya colaboraciones entre artistas profesionales y comunidades para crear arte público y programas educativos que inspiren la justicia social en la ciudad de Nueva York, NY.

Mafe Izaguirre es una artista venezolana con sede en Nueva York, conocida por sus instalaciones cibernéticas y máquinas sensibles™. Si no está familiarizado con el programa, Emerging Artist Fellowship es el programa de 2 niveles, Beca y Residencia de More Art para artistas que buscan desarrollar y mantener su arte público y prácticas socialmente comprometidas. El plan de estudios del programa abarca una serie de desarrollo profesional, oportunidades de comisiones de arte público, tutoría y redes de pares. Izaguirre ha sido seleccionada como parte de la cohorte que comenzará esta semana, con el desarrollo de uno de los proyectos que figuran como de importancia crítica para el espacio público que se completarán a principios de 2021.

El trabajo de Mafe Izaguirre explorando la inteligencia emocional artificial enmarcada como “El Proyecto Mente” fue elegido a través de un concurso de arte público realizado el año pasado 2019 por el comité de More Art. More Art se centra en construir colaboraciones con la comunidad al crear oportunidades para la educación creativa y proyectos de arte en el espacio público. La beca de doce meses proporciona infraestructura y laboratorio para artistas emergentes y subrepresentados con sede en Nueva York para obtener una comprensión más profunda de la historia del campo del arte público, incubar y desarrollar su investigación y proyecto en etapas iniciales, colaborar con las comunidades en la formación de la sociedad, y construir carreras sostenibles.

Mafe Izaguirre (Venezuela, 1978) es una artista venezolana radicada en Nueva York. Su obra, denominada El Proyecto Mente propone un sistema fragmentario de cuerpos cibernéticos y memoria extendida que constituyen su ser espiritual híbrido. Estas instalaciones cibernéticas han sido exhibidas y presentadas en galerías y seminarios en Nueva York así como en el seminario Humano: Demasiado Posthumano, organizado por la UCAB y Fundación Telefónica, en Venezuela (2019). Egresada de PROdiseño, Izaguirre se ha desarrollado profesionalmente también en el campo del diseño gráfico aplicado a medios digitales y como educadora. En 2016, se muda a Nueva York para estudiar técnicas de fabricación en Cooper Union, entre otras capacitaciones técnicas necesarias para construir, lo que Izaguirre denomina, “máquinas sensibles”. Su trabajo explora la mente artificial desde las ideas propuestas por el posthumanismo filosófico: un movimiento que sitúa al humano como un ser plural, fluido y descentralizado que cohabita en múltiples espacios de interacción con máquinas, software, otras especies y sistemas híbridos espirituales.

Izaguirre colabora como mentora orientando a niños y jóvenes en cuanto al uso de la tecnología con fines sociales en la organización sin fines de lucro Mouse Inc., y como artista residente en el Centro de Arte DreamYard Project ubicado en el Bronx. Izaguirre pertenece a la Asociación de Artistas de Long Island City; es fundadora y Directora Creativa de la revista psicoanalítica ROOM: Skeckbook for Analytic Action, una publicación independiente que intersecta análisis, política, arte, cultura y activismo.
